Club Notes – 18th December 2024

Miyawaki Forest

On Friday 13 of December 2024, in collaboration with @100_million_trees and with the support of AIB, we made a massive step towards environmental sustainability in our club. With the help of club volunteers, we were able to plant 1,700 native Irish trees, making us the proud stewards of the largest mini forest on any sporting site in Dublin!

To further promote biodiversity, we have also installed bat houses and will soon be building several bug hotels to create a thriving ecosystem within our grounds. In addition, we plan to rewild the area in front of the newly planted trees which will provide a vital habitat for wildlife.

We were delighted to welcome our club sponsors Supervalu Lucan and EdgeConneX to the event. Their generous support has been instrumental, and it was fantastic to see them join us in planting trees and investing in a more sustainable future.

As a club, we understand the importance of protecting our environment and want to ensure that future generations not only enjoy our facilities but also inherit a greener, more sustainable planet!

U21 Dublin ‘A’ Hurling Champions

The final competitive action of the adult hurling season saw our Under 21 hurlers win the Dublin ‘A ‘Championship for the fourth time in the Club’s history (following previous wins in 2008, 2014 and 2019).  The title was secured in a hard-fought victory over Faughs played in difficult conditions – see match report below.  Great credit is due to the full panel of players and to the management team of Niall Gleeson, Johnny McCaffrey, Aidan Roche and Peter Kelly.  This management team have done great work with the Under 21s over the past three years, winning the ‘B’ Championship in 2022, losing the ‘A’ final on penalties last year, and then securing the ultimate prize this year.  More importantly, they have contributed hugely to the development of the next generation of adult hurlers for the club which will hopefully provide a platform for ultimate senior success.

As the season draws to a close, we would like to thank all the hurlers who togged out for the Club this year, all the mentors who worked with our teams and all our volunteers and supporters. Looking forward to lots more in 2025!

Under 21 Hurling ‘A’ Championship Final:  Lucan Sarsfields 3-10  Faughs 1-8.

O’Toole Park, 7/12/2024.

This match was played in very blustery conditions as the tail-end of Storm Darragh blew across O’Toole Park.  The wind made it difficult for free-flowing hurling but both teams showed great endeavour and skill to provide a very entertaining match despite the conditions.  Faughs got off to a great start with a goal from a penalty in the second minute.  Lucan also lost centre back Jack Behan to illness early in the game though Cillian Costello proved to be a very able replacement, and he had a very good game when introduced.  Lucan gradually settled into the game and three frees from Sean Harkness had them trailing by just a point, 1-1 to 0-3, after 15 minutes.   Lucan took the lead in the 18th minute when Darragh Meehan finished a great move with a brilliant goal. A David Mulqueen point two minutes later had Lucan 2 points up after 20 minutes.  Faughs threatened a quick response at the other end but Cathal Doody brought off a great save to deny them.  A further free from Harkness and a Meehan point from play stretched the lead before Liam Garrigan capitalised on a great pass from Darragh Lyons and scored Lucan’s second goal in the 25th minute to open a decisive gap,  Faughs replied with a point to leave the half time score 2-6 to 1-4.

Faughs started the second half with renewed intensity and started to dominate.  They got the first three points of the half to reduce the deficit to just three.   A long range Hugh Cuffe point in the 45th minute was Lucan’s first of the half.  This was quickly followed up by a point from Joey Dunne to bring the scoreline to 2-8 to 1-7 with 10 minutes to play.  Lucan were exerting control again and two further points from play from Sean Harkness extended the lead to six.  The victory was effectively secured in the 57th minute when David Mulqueen combined with his brother Charlie and finished expertly to get Lucan’s third goal.  Faughs replied with a late point, but the gap was too much, and Lucan were deserving winners at the final whistle on a scoreline of 3-10 to 1-8.  Captain Sean Harkness accepted the Cup at the end of the game and the celebrations began!

This was a very effective all round team performance from Lucan with all 19 players who featured making a contribution and ultimately this strength in depth was the difference between the teams. Ryan Clancy was outstanding in a very resolute defence, Liam Garrigan gave a man of the match performance in mid-field while Darragh Meehan was most prominent in the forwards.  This was the culmination of a four-match championship campaign and 8 weeks of great commitment from the full panel of players and they fully deserved this historic success.

Lucan Team/scorers:  Cathal Doody, Sean Langton, Massimo Pappalardo, Alex Hickey, Ryan Clancy, Jack Behan, Cathal Kennedy, Darragh Lyons, Liam Garrigan (1-0), Hugh Cuffe (0-1), Darragh Meehan (1-1), Matt Coogan, Brendan Kavanagh, Sean Harkness (0-6, 0-4f), David Mulqueen (1-1).

Subs introduced: Cillian Costello, Joey Dunne (0-1), Charlie Mulqueen, Senan Bolger.

Panellists: James Finn, Jamie Smith, Michael Young, Paddy Ryan, Conor Hyland, Cathal Geraghty, Cormac Coffey, Shane Coffey, Liam Fitzgerald, Cian Canavan, Sean O’Neill, Conor Greally, Michael Cunningham, Dan Kane, Finn Bruton.

Mentors:  Niall Gleeson, Johnny McCaffrey, Aidan Roche, Peter Kelly, Mark Smith.

After a hard-fought final, unfortunately it wasn’t to be for our U21A camogie team as they lost their championship final to BallybodenHard luck to the team and management.

Our u13 girls finished the year with an old-fashioned street league playing for a very special cup named after our club’s biggest match day supporter, Paul Heneghan. Four teams, Tipp, Cork, Kilkenny and Waterford competed, with first half of each game camogie and second half football. The final paired Cork with Kilkenny with Cork coming out on top. Thank you to Paul and club president Pat Keane for giving up their time and presenting the cup to the winning captain.

U21 Camogie & Hurling Championship Finals

After two successful campaigns both our U21A Camogie & U21A Hurling teams have made it to their respective county finals.

Firstly, our Camogie team play their final against Ballyboden this Friday evening the 6th of December in Abbottstown. This match is throwing in at 19:30.

The following day, Saturday 7th of December, our Hurlers face Faughs in O’Toole Park at 2pm.

This is a great achievement for the club to have two adult teams competing in ‘A’ Championship Finals in the one weekend and we would like to wish both teams and management the best of luck. We encourage all of our members to wear their club colours and get out to support both teams!

U21 Hurling

U21 Hurling Championship Semi-Final
Raheny 1-13 Lucan Sarsfields 3-22
St Anne’s Park, 30/11/24.

Lucan u21s advance to the championship final after this good win over Raheny. The game was more competitive than the scoreline suggests. Lucan led by just two points early in the second half, but a dominant final 20 minutes saw them win comprehensively in the end.

The early stages were evenly contested before a Matt Coogan goal gave Lucan the advantage. They had pulled six clear before Raheny goaled in the 20th minute, but Lucan stretched the lead to five again by halftime, 1-12 to 1-7. Raheny started the second half well and had reduced the deficit to just two points by the 35th minute. However, Lucan responded and two goals in quick succession from Sean Harkness and David Mulqueen gave them a commanding advantage which they didn’t relinquish. Overall, it was a good team performance and a well-deserved victory.

Lucan team/scorers; C Doody, A Hickey, M Pappalardo, S Langton (0-1), R Clancy (0-1), J Behan, C Kennedy (0-1), D Lyons, L Garrigan (0-2), H Cuffe, D Meehan (0-3), M Coogan (1-2), B Kavanagh, S Harkness (1-8, 0-5f, 0-2 ‘65s), D Mulqueen (1-2). New Director of Adult Hurling

A After 4 years in their roles, Paul Stapleton and Vince O’Connor, are stepping down as Directors of Adult Hurling. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to them for their dedication, leadership, and invaluable contributions to hurling in Lucan Sarsfields over the last 4 years. Their hard work and vision have helped shape the path we are on today, and we are deeply appreciative of their commitment to our mission and goals.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Directors of Adult Hurling, Declan O’Leary and John Kennedy. Declan has been involved in the club for many years as mentor, serving on the Executive and as chairperson. He is currently chairperson of Dublin GAA Bord na nÓg. John has also mentored teams at juvenile level and was club secretary for 2 years.

Each brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to their roles, and we are confident they will continue to drive hurling forward with innovation, passion, and dedication. We look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead as we continue to grow and evolve with their leadership.

Football

Due to changing personnel circumstances, Conor Bresnan has stepped down as manager of the senior football team. In his short period in the role, Conor oversaw significant change in both the management team and the playing panel. He built a strong management structure with great people and developed a young and inexperienced panel into a team capable of competing at the highest level in Dublin club football. The key objectives of this year of transition were to retain our status in senior 1 league and championship were both achieved, and he leaves strong foundations for the coming seasons.

Stephen O’Shaughnessy is taking over as senior manager. Stephen brings a wealth of playing experience both with club and county as well as years of management experience in his role with county underage teams. Stephen will build on the work commenced by Conor with most of the coaching and support team remaining in place.

Other changes to the management team see Damien O’Brien stepping down as selector to be replaced by Fergal Gavin.

The club would like to wish Stephen and all involved with senior football success in the coming years.

For anyone, either within or outside the club, who believes that they have the ability and desire to join the senior football squad, please complete the short form at https://forms.office.com/e/RMh3xit9fp and Stephen will be in contact with you.
