Lucan qualify for Senior One camogie semi-final

Lucan Sarsfields 0-10 St Vincents 1-15

Lucan Sarsfields have qualified for their third Senior One camogie championship semi-final on the trot despite coming out on the wrong side of a serious clash with St Vincents in perfect conditions at the 12th Lock on Sunday morning.

Lucan were under pressure when turning over ten points down (1-10 to 0-3) at the break. An Ali Maguire goal for the visitors after 17 minutes creating the daylight between the teams.

However, a tour-de-force from midfielder Orla Beagan in the third quarter really took the game to Vincents as Lucan pushed up and began to hurl with passion and buckets of pace and skill.

After 51 minutes, Lucan had cut the deficit to four points and real possibilities existed (1-11 to 0-10).

Lucan then had a couple of wides. Vincents had a couple of pointed frees and Lucan never got any closer despite Beagan rattling the cross-bar with a late free which would have put a better gloss on the scoreboard from a Lucan point of view.

§  Anyway, it’s immaterial now as all roads lead to Ballyboden for the semi-final this Sunday (Throw-in 12.45pm). The shadow boxing has ended. The championship begins.

Joelenne Hoary was under-employed in the Lucan goal as the tigerish Lucan full-back line always looked fairly comfortable, despite the well-worked Maguire goal. Sarah Courtney, in particular, did well at number three.

Annemarie Courtney at centre-back had a good hour while Claire Rigney is back to her very best on the evidence of her display after half-time.

Lucan were very solid in the middle of the park where Beagan and Laura Murtagh and her workrate meant that the home side broke even there – indeed, after half-time they did better than that.

Sam Fitzgerald can be happy with her senior championship debut while Laura O’Mahony won four frees (all were scored by Beagan) through her direct running at the heart of the Vincents’ defence.

Lucan scorers: Orla Beagan 0-9 (0-6 frees), Kate Whyte 0-1.
