Two first half goals from Orlaith Murphy and Sinead O'Toole and a starring performance from midfielder Sam Fitzgerald were not enough to hold off powerful Ulster champions Eoghan Rua at a very wet 12th Lock on Sunday.
Niamh Byrne was an early injury casualty and the Lucan full back line struggled thereafter to cope with the skill and pace of their opposite numbers from Derry. The absence of Sarah Cotter, also through injury, didn't help either.
Joelenne Hoary gave another assured display between the posts and is now getting prodigious distances into her booming puck outs.
Orla Beagan took the game almost single-handedly to the northern girls before half-time and when rising star Sam Fitzgerald, full of jinks, swerves and magic joined her at mid-field for the second half, they defied the odds for a long time. Ultimately, they were simply overwhelmed by too many good hurlers.
Nicole Fitzgibbon came on in the second half and won tremendous possession at full forward.
Ciara Casey kept Lucan in the game for a long while after half time with her points from play and from frees, but eventually Eoghan Ruapulled away to a deserved victory in the worsening conditions. Not a day for the faint hearted. Or for hurling really. Only for ducks.
