Hurling (weekend 17th Aug)

Championship action resumed after the short summer break this weekend and we had three teams in action.  The seniors had a two-point win over St Brigid's, the Junior As lost to St Peregrines by the same margin while the Junior Bs recorded a very comprehensive win over Kilmacud Crokes.  Our Intermediates had a bye this weekend, and our Junior Bs received a walkover.  All our teams remain in contention to progress after three rounds of the group stages.

Senior Hurling Championship:  Lucan Sarsfields 0-23 St Brigid's 2-15.

O'Toole Park, Saturday 17/8/2024.

A win for Lucan seniors but the margin was much closer than it should have been.  Lucan dominated from the early stages and built up an early lead but wayward shooting and sometimes taking the wrong options meant the lead was much less than it should have been.  Lucan led 0-11 to 0-6 at half time but should really have been out of sight with the number of chances they created in the first half.  On the positive side they hurled well in many aspects in that first half and just needed more accuracy and composure to make it count.  The trend continued in the second half; despite playing against the breeze, Lucan extended the lead to 9 points with less than 15 minutes to play.   They again missed opportunities to put the game to bed.  Brigid's hung in and eventually broke through for a goal with about 5 minutes to play.  A second goal on the verge of full time narrowed the gap to a single point but Lucan got the final score to win by two as much relief greeted the final whistle.  Overall, a well-deserved victory for Lucan but they will be wondering how they left it so tight at the end having been comfortably in control for most of the game.  There were good performances from John Bellew and Shane Coffey in defence, while Ben Coffey led the forward line well with good contributions from Ciaran Dowling and Charlie Keher also.  Cathal Kennedy and Darragh Lyons made senior championship debuts when introduced in the second half and both acquitted themselves well.

Lucan Team/Scorers:  S McClelland, S Coffey, P Rigney, L Walsh, McCaffrey (0-3), J Bellew, C Crummey, K Fitzgerald (0-1), C Walsh (0-2), R Smith, B Coffey (0-9, 0-5f), J Behan, C Dowling (0-4), P Crummey, C Keher (0-3).  Subs introduced: D Flannery, C Kennedy, M Coogan, D Lyons (0-1).

Junior Hurling Championship. Lucan: 4-31, Kilmacud Crokes: 0-3.

Lucan junior B hurlers maintained their winning ways in round three of the Junior "E" hurling championship with an easy win in 12th Lock on Friday evening last. Despite missing a number of regulars who were amongst the movers and shakers at Electric Picnic, the home side were in total control of the match, and had it not been for an inspired performance from the visitor's goalkeeper, coupled with some poor shooting this would have been an absolute rout. He saved three certain goals in the first 10 minutes alone. However, even he could not hold back the tide of scores as Lucan swept forward at every opportunity.  All the six forwards got on the score sheet with a mix of good individual and team scores on display.  Sean Teehan and Kevin Gormley with three apiece, Fionan Breen with four led the scoring.  Kevin Gormley finally got the better of the Crokes keeper, sending Lucan into the half time break leading 1-16 to no score ahead. Cillian Morrisey, Liam Farrell, Joey McSweeney, Daire Quinn and James Mulley mopped up the rare Crokes attack. Conor Mulqueen, Alan Flanagan and stand in keeper Tiernan Swords also put in solid displays.

The second half was a repeat of the first with scores coming from all over the field. However, sub-Cormac Coffey showed both power and pace when introduced. He contributed 2-1 off the bench, with his second goal a carbon copy of a goal the great Eoin Cody scored for Kilkenny in Croke Park during the summer when he doubled on the ball in mid-air following an initial save from the keeper to finish to the net.  Again, had it not been for the valiant efforts of the Crokes keeper he could have had 5 goals. Aidan Glover added the fourth goal. Subs Jack McCarthy and Darragh Reid also made valuable contributions. A rousing run and score from Mully, showing one or two of the younger forwards how it's done was another highlight of the second half.

We now sit top of the table, unbeaten after three matches.  Next up is an away fixture v O'Toole's in two weeks.

Lucan: T. Swords, J. Mullins (0-1), A. Flanagan, D Quinn, J. McSweeney, C. Mulqueen, C. Morrisey (0-1). L. Farrell (0-2), K. Gormley (1-5). F. Breen (0-7), A. Whyte (0-2), E. Kilduff (0-1), S. Teehan (0-5), A. Glover (1-1). E. Power (0-2), C. Coffey (2-1) J. McCarthy (0-1). D. Reid.

Social

Our own Emer Keenan was invited to Croke Park for the All-Ireland Camogie finals as they honoured all past winning captains. Emer captained Dublin to a Junior All Ireland in 2018 and has done trojan work over the years for both club and county. It was a great achievement for her to be recognised. Pictured below after the parade with Louise Flynn and Maeve McGuire.

The Clarke family from Lucan, Ontario in Canada paid a visit to the club to watch the Junior A hurling championship. After the match, two of our club “elders”, Paul Heneghan and Joe Byrne, made a presentation to the family to mark their visit and the connection between two towns more than 5000kms apart. Pictured below: Martin Clarke, Joanne Clarke, Paul Heneghan, Joe Byrne & Laura Clarke.
