Lucan Sarsfield’s Club Notes
Hurling
Lucan adult hurling ended up with just four of the planned six matches being played at the weekend. First up, our seniors got a win away against St Brigid's. At the same time, the Inters put in a good performance at home to deal comfortably with Faughs’ challenge. Next on to Pitch 1 was our Junior A team who had too much for Ballinteer. In the afternoon our Junior B team, with AGP being declared unplayable by the referee, moved their Erin Go Bragh fixture to the 12th Lock. This was a very one-sided affair with Lucan taking the spoils again. Our Junior C North team got a late walkover against St Joseph’s O’Connell Boys who were unable to field. The Junior C South team didn’t have a fixture as hosts St Kevin Killian’s didn’t have a pitch. There is now a break in adult hurling competitive fixtures due to Paddy’s Day and Easter with the next round of the league scheduled for April 6th/7th.
AHL Div 1 St Brigid’s 2-10 Lucan Sarsfields 1-17
10th March, Tom Russell Park
Lucan seniors had to go on the road for their second league encounter. Played on Brigid’s main pitch, both teams found underfoot conditions difficult as the surface was quite slippery. Lucan were first to settle and registered good scores from the off. A Sean Harkness point was followed by a Charlie Mulqueen goal with further scores from Ciaran Dowling, Ben Coffey and Kevin Fitzgerald setting the desired tone. Three more points were added but some sloppy plan and a lessening of intensity left Brigid’s in for two goals towards then end of the half to leave the score at 1-11 to 2-4 at the break.
Lucan did not have the same fluency in the second half. The margin remained around the four-point mark as both sides traded score for score in the third quarter. Two additional Harkness frees plus two from Matt Coogan provided some breathing space as Brigid’s frustration threatened to boil over. Lucan were the better side overall and were deserving of the six-point margin on the back of the opening twenty minutes
Team and scorers: C Murray; S Coffey, P Rigney, L Walsh (0-1); C Stritch, M McCaffrey, R Ward; R Clancy, K Fitzgerald (0-1); D Lyons (0-1), C Dowling (0-4), M Coogan (0-3); S Harkness (0-7: 0-5f), B Coffey (0-2), C Mulqueen (1-0); S Langton, E Dowling, H Cuffe.
AHL Div 6 Lucan Sarsfields 2-17 Ballinteer 1-7
10th March 13th Lock
Lucan played with the wind in the first half and looked sharp from the off. Ballinteer also seemed competitive, so a good contest appeared to be in store. Two early Ciaran Keane scores got Lucan up and running with Garret Kennedy, a lively Dan Barry Murphy and Peter Fagan also contributing. Ballinteer attacks were being routinely thwarted as the game progressed. Direct running by Evan Lombard was causing the visitors problems, especially when he found the net after the opening quarter. Lucan got up to 1-8 without reply as the backs established a really solid platform. Ballinteer found it difficult against the wind and either hit wides, were blocked or were outfought.
In the second half, Ballinteer kept plugging away and scored 1-7 but scores continued to be hard to come by. Ciaran Keane put over seven frees and ended up with a total of 1-8. The forwards looked to have too much pace with Lombard adding two further points. It was difficult for Ballinteer to identify any weakness to pinpoint as there wasn’t any on display in an all-round good team performance
Team and scorers: L Finnerty; J Doyle, J Byrne, E Connolly; D Walsh, D Kelly, M Young (0-1); C Ó Maolmhána, P Fagan (0-1); C Keane (1-8: 0-7f), E Lombard (1-2), D Barry Murphy(0-2); G Kennedy (0-1), A Carroll (0-1), C Canavan; K Gormley (0-1), A O’Neill, N O’Leary, C Mulqueen, E Conheady
AHL Div 9 Lucan V Erin Go Bragh
Lucan 2-26, Erin Go Bragh 0-5.
Lucan Junior B's made it two wins from two when they had a comprehensive win over Erin go Bragh on Sunday. Lucan was in control from the start and dominated all areas of the pitch. Teamwork, work rate and skill were all in evidence as scores came from all over. While the forwards deserve credit for notching up a big scoreline, there were solid defensive displays from newcomer Dylan Ryan and stalwarts Tiernan Swords and Alan Flanagan. Kian Quinn, Joey McSweeney and Cillian Morrisey also put in a huge shift. Cian Ryan and Liam Farrell ensured there was plenty of ball going into the forwards. Niall Higgins with two goals was in great form and he was ably assisted by Conor Sheery, Adam Duffy, who was unerring from frees and Adam Whyte who put in a powerful performance at centre forward. Ross Campion and Darragh Quinn also got their names on the scoreboard. Four used subs added to the great team effort with Eoin Power, Sean Teehan and Jack McCarthy contributing further scores upon their introduction. Tougher games lie ahead but this new team are gelling together nicely and are looking forward to what the season brings.
