Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

November 27, 2023

Club News

A proud moment for all in the club this week as we celebrate with Abby Sheils, who has finished the year in style with an All Star adding it to an All Ireland and a Golden Glove.

The Club would like to thank all the efforts and dedication of the outgoing executive, some officers leaving after five years’ service with a tear in their eye showing how much they love the club. We are also proud to have our first female Chairperson, Mary Flannery a quietly dedicated lady of the club, we wish Mary and the new Exec all the best for 2024.

Finally as I step down as PRO I have had a wonderful time celebrating all the successes at all levels, it’s great to be involved in such a vibrant friendly place. I hand over the reign’s to our new PRO Ella Dawson, I hope you can support her as she grows the profile of the club.

I would also like to deliver the first Christmas joke before the Gala dinner crackers are opened…..

Knock, Knock! Who’s there? Irish. Irish who? Irish you a Merry Christmas

Hurling

In addition to recieving an All Star, another highlight of this weekend for the Club was in O'Toole Park on Sunday morning as Lucan captured the Dublin Minor A Hurling Championship for only the second time in a dramatic one point win over Kilmacud Crokes. Congratulations to the players, mentors, parents and all involved. See match report below. Meanwhile the Minor C's qualified for the final with a three point win over Whitehall. Next weekend will be another big weekend as our U21s face Kilmacud Crokes in the 'A' Championship final in O'Toole Park on Saturday, throw-in at 11.30am. The Minor C's final could be next weekend also - watch out for fixture details.

The Club is pleased to confirm that this year's Senior Hurling management team will continue for next year headed by Charlie Carter as Manager, with Kieran Murphy (coach), Gerry Bellew and Peter Kelly as selectors. Dermot English is joining the team as coach/selector also. Mark Smith (logistics), Ciaran O'Donoghue (S&C), Oisin McCabe (physio) and Phil Lanigan (match day observations) are all on board again. We wish them the very best for the season ahead.

Minor A Championship Final: Lucan Sarsfields 1-19 Kilmacud Crokes 1-18. O'Toole Park, 26/11/2023.

This pairing was a repeat of last year's U17 final when Crokes snatched a dramatic victory with a couple of late goals. The roles were reversed this year as it was Lucan who came from behind to grab victory at the death in what was an outstanding game of minor hurling. The early exchanges were cautious with both sides missing some chances as they traded scores. It was 0-2 each after 10 minutes and 0-3 each after 15. All of those early Lucan scores coming from Darragh Lyons frees. A first Lucan score from play by David Mulqueen sparked a good patch for Lucan as Sean Langton and Ryan Clancy added good long range points to put Lucan three ahead. However, Crokes reversed the tide and gained superiority for the next 10 minutes, hitting 6 points without reply. Charlie Mulqueen stopped the rot but two more Crokes points left them leading 0-11 to 0-7 at half time.

Senan Bolger got the first score of the second half but then in the 33rd minute, Crokes got a goal to put them 6 ahead and looking good for another title. However, Lucan refused to buckle and responded well. Another long range point from Ryan Clancy, an equally impressive score from Eoin Conheady and then a free from Darragh Lyons brought the margin back to 3 again, 1-11 to 0-11 after 40 minutes. The sides then exchanged a series of points with three more Lyons frees and a point from substitute Killian Costello keeping Lucan in touch at 1-15 to 0-15 with 10 minutes to play. The exchanges remained very even as Ryan Clancy got his third score of the day and another Darragh Lyons free left it 1-17 to 0-17 with just two minutes of normal time left. Then came the real drama as Lucan corner forward Senan Bolger caught a great ball, beat a couple of defenders and fired to the roof of the net for a brilliant goal to level the game in the 59th minute. Crokes responded and won a free which they duly scored to go one up again in injury time. But Lucan, steeled from their heartbreaking experience a year earlier, refused to be beaten this time and Darragh Lyons, unerring from placed balls throughout, stepped up again with a good point from play to level again and it looked like extra-time was beckoning.

There was time for more drama though. Lucan centre-back and captain, Cathal Kennedy, got possession in the middle of the field, and as the Crokes backs converged on him, he managed to strike off his back foot and his long range effort dropped over the bar - a brilliant score to win a brilliant game. There was time for one more minute but Lucan held firm and the final whistle generated unconfined joy for the players and supporters. Lucan captain, Cathal Kennedy, accepted the Cup on behalf of the team in what was a richly deserved success for this group of players and mentors.

Whitehall Colmcille 0-6 Lucan Sarsfields 1-6 Minor D Championship Semi Final Whitehall 26/11/2023

Lucan’s third minor team continued their progress towards their championship final - they were on the road again having overcome Kevins in their last outing. Whilst the Lucan Minor A team played in front of a large crowd in O'Toole Park, our C team were again cheered on by their equally loyal band of supporters. This was a very tense encounter. Lucan opened the scoring with points from Shane Dolan and a 65 from Sean McGowan. Whitehall responded in kind as the game progressed with two points of their own and it was clear to the Lucan defenders that they had their hands full against some very dangerous forwards. Midway through the half came the key score of the game when keeper Josh Murphy despatched a penalty to the net. Conor Dolan and Aidan Barry added further scores to leave Lucan ahead by 1-4 to 0-5 at the interval.

The tension ramped up further in the second half. Both sets of defenders remained on top and scores were even harder to come by. Lucan missed some frees during the game but crucially, Whitehall failed to take advantage as they went for goals from placed balls and from play when easier points were there for the taking. Sean Teehan and Niall Melville got the Lucan scores in the second half and Whitehall were restricted to a single score. Five minutes of injury time was successfully negotiated to the relief of players, mentors and supporters! This team now has a final against St Sylvesters to look forward to as they overcame Kilmacud Crokes.

The hooking and blocking performed by all players was the platform for the win - this was a classic "bodies on the line" performance. Callum Conway, Ben O'Keeffe, Sean McGowan and Sean Corry were heroic but, in truth, this was a victory for all members of the panel that have played their part throughout the year.

Team and scorers: A Barry (0-1), Ben O’Keeffe, C Conway, C Dolan (0-1), C Lawlor, C O’Driscoll, D Kenna, D Mahon, J Murphy (1-0 pen), J Scott, N Melville (0-1), O Fitton, R Donnelly, R McCormack, R Murray, R O’Connell, S Corry, S Dolan (0-1), S McGowan (0-1 65), S Teehan (0-1)

Healthy Club

safeTALK (suicide alertness for everyone) is a half day training programme that prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources using the steps of TALK (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe). These specific skills are called suicide alertness and are taught with the expectation that the person learning them will use them to help reduce suicide risk in their communities. Participants learn how to provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide in only a few hours.

Following a safeTALK workshop you will be more capable to support people with thoughts of suicide by signposting them to suicide first aid resources in their local area.
