Club News

 The club has been allocated a small number of stand tickets for the All Ireland Hurling Final, cost €90 each. Draw is open to paid up full members over the age of 16 only. Draw will take place in the club on THURSDAY 20th JULY at 10pm, entries must be submitted by 8pm on that day and collected on the night.

There will also be a paper form in the café and the club bar.

We will announce a draw for the All Ireland Football final this week as soon as we get an allocation of tickets, the above link is for Hurling only!

Hurling

The serious business of the season began this weekend with the opening rounds for the hurling championships and it was a very positive start for Lucan with two wins from two - the Seniors having a good win against champions Kilmacud Crokes and the Junior B's comprehensively beating Naomh Fionnbarra - see reports below. The Junior B's and Junior C's commence their campaigns this Monday evening away to St Finians and St Marks respectively. This will be the first time Lucan field a fifth adult team in the championship so a significant milestone for hurling in the club.

Senior Hurling Championship: Lucan Sarsfields 1-18 Kilmacud Crokes 2-11. O'Toole Park, Friday 14th July 2023 

Lucan seniors had a positive opening to their championship campaign with this deserved win over defending champions Kilmacud Crokes. Playing against a strong breeze, Lucan started well and a goal from Ben Coffey in the 6th minute set them on their way. The game was tense and tight for most of the first half with scores hard to come by on both sides. Crokes got through for a goal in the 24th minute after a couple of great saves by Cillian Murray and several chances to clear the ball from the Lucan defence. This gave Crokes the lead and they held it by 2 points at the interval, 1-8 to 1-6. Four placed balls from Sean Harkness and well taken efforts from Kevin Fitzgerald and Colm Walsh accounted for the other Lucan scores. 

^{After the beak, Lucan had the conditions in their favour and set about their task with renewed energy and intensity. They were level by the 33rd minute and a dominant third quarter had them 5 points up by the middle of the half. Chris O'Leary had picked off a couple of good scores while Harkness continued to be accurate from frees. Crokes had reduced the gap to 4 inside the last 10 minutes and then they were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute. Cillian Murray saved the penalty but Crokes reacted fastest to the rebound and forced the ball to the net. Just 1 point ahead with 3 minutes to play, Lucan now looked vulnerable to a late ambush, but they responded very well to the challenge and got the last 3 points to win by four. Murray in goal, John Bellew at full back, Sean Harkess who scored 11 from 12 placed balls, and Chris O'Leary in the second half, were the standout performers for Lucan on the night.}

Junior B Hurling Championship: Lucan Sarsfields 2-31 Naomh Fionnbarra 3-7. 12th Lock, Sunday 16th July 2023. 

Lucan Junior A's had a very comprehensive win in their opening championship encounter. A sprightly Mick May was on fire early on putting over a string of points from distance and had 6 scored by half time. Killian Boylan got an early goal and a couple of points, as did Shane Donohue as Lucan had the game effectively won by half time, leading 2-16 to 0-4. The game got a little more scrappy in the second half as the pace dropped but Lucan remained in control with Peter Kelly calling the shots at centre back. Evan Lombard picked off some nice points as did Ciaran Keane to keep Lucan well ahead and always comfortable, despite a couple of late goals by the visitors. Lucan will face tougher tests ahead but will be pleased to have got the campaign off to a winning start.

Football

Lucan Sarsfields 2-9 v 0-17 Ballyfermot 11/07/23. AFL6 19.30. Ballyfermot 

This was a dead rubber for Lucan. A final league fixture to be fulfilled. Maybe a chance to try a few things. Ballyfermot on the other hand, needed a victory to avoid relegation play off. To any neutral observer this would have sounded like the most rabid of championship games. There was a definite whiff of cordite. 30 players finished on the pitch. The only explanation is that the ref forgot his cards. Both teams were very fortunate to finish with their full complement. Flailing elbows, kicking (bodies not balls), sliding tackles, trips, and don’t get me started about the verbals!!

^{Lucan lost, in the end. A game they really should have won, but a whole raft of positives to be taken. They do say you learn most from your defeats. Hopefully that proves to be the case.} 

^{First and foremost Dean Davis got 30 mins back between the sticks. A little over 4 months since last togging out. When reports were filtering back to us from the hospital there was very little expectation that we’d see him again this year! So a huge lift for all of us, and nothing wrong with the performance either!}

^{The boys in green and gold exploded from the blocks and had Lucan pinned inside their 45 for the opening 8mins. They got off a lot of bullets, but only managed 2 on target. Lucan looked shell shocked. Unprepared for the unkind welcome that they had encountered.} 

^{Finally Lucan managed to get hands on the ball in the middle third. A long Brossie ball into the corner, was won by Aaron. A smart layoff to Tony, who must have been tempted to take his score, but instead a pinpoint cross field ball to Sam, who gave the keeper no chance from close range. It was a pass wasn’t it Tony? Ballyfermot seemed enraged to find themselves in arrears. That is very seriously enraged, because they’d been pretty angry before the goal.} 

^{Again Lucan were pinned back, and another 10 mins passed with all the play in the wrong third of the pitch. This time Ballyfermot managed 4 white flags. Lucan were making occasional forays down the field, but if the general welcome was unkind, then their defence were downright rude!! Peter got in a tangle with his opposite number. To be honest I think your nose is straighter now, than it was. There was a time this might have escalated. In the ensuing few mins Peter twice side stepped his man, on the second leaving him sitting on the ground. That was better than any boxing match! We won’t go into the details of Ken and the pup. And he was a pup.} 

^{There was more rough house stuff, but Lucan used their pace to keep the ball moving. Finally Callum lifted the siege. Sam popped a couple, either of which might just as easily have been 3 pointers. Aaron converted a super free to level matters, only for a very soft free to give them the last laugh. Down a point at the turn. I think that was an excellent position to be in, considering how little ball we had seen of the ball. Second half was a proper belter. And a few belts were definitely shared. For all the noise. All the shouting and roaring. No Lucan player left the field. 5 Ballyfermot lads hobbled to the line. No foul blow, but it was tough out there. Lucan won the moving quarter 1-4 v 0-2 and had the game in their hands.} 

^{Some super scores, and a few more had gone abegging. With 7 mins to go Lucan had a 4 point cushion, and their foot on the Ballyfermot throat.} 

^{Management had told them to go out and play football. Enjoy the evening. Well if we could turn back the clock, we might tweak that one!!} 

^{Lads went for the kill. Kamikaze dive bombers would have shown more restraint than Lucan did. We had the whip hand, and should have been parking large school buses in the middle of the park. Oh no that’s not the instruction! Ballyfermot keeper pings a long kick out. Our old comrade, Kev McBride, plucks the ball from the sky, turns and in our half of the field there’s Dean. Just the keeper. All on his own. They should have raised a green flag. We were very lucky it was only a point. Gung Ho defence? Lost that final 7+ mins 0-1 v 0-7. Funny thing is that there were so many positives, that even that late capitulation seems like a lesson we might learn from. Of course, it’s easy to say that after 24 hours of water have gushed under the bridge!! A bit less relaxed last night. Shane. Excellent first half in goal, and did fine outfield in the second. Declan. Had his hands full with speed merchant. Stuck to the task. Eoin. His 5th game back. We’re all afraid to ask how’s the war wound? Had a super game.} 

^{Colm. Centre back on Sunday. Corner back today. Don’t recall a foot in the wrong place. Wouldn’t have said that on Sunday! Class last line defender.} 

^{Cian. He kept popping up as furthest man forward. Driving me demented. Yet, he always seemed to be back on his man. Might need to put a tracker on him.} 

^{James. I have had personal doubts that he’s a centre back. I still don’t think he is, but if he wants, he will be. Raw talent. Always seemed to be available. No stepping back here!} 

^{Callum. Can I mention kicking sideline to their guy? No. Perhaps not, it would be small minded amongst such a brave performance.} 

^{Adam. 3rd game back. 1-1 on his return was always going to be tough act to follow. Work. Work. Work.} 

^{Peter. I know a good bone setter. A man for all seasons, and putting in some bravura performances.} 

^{Sam. I counted 3 lads put on him. To little avail. Definitely knows how to score. But when so many of their defence are headed for you, then we must have free men.} 

^{Tony. It’s a tough gig when you keep getting new roles. Had a really good night, and a constant threat when carrying. Love a guy that comes off angry at losing.} 

^{Michael. Bumped from full back line to half forward. Didn’t get long enough before returning home. Good on the ball. Didn’t seem to get on much ball, but then neither did their corner forward. Job done!} 

^{David. Played a roving role. Always looking to provide support. Peach of a ball for opening goal.} 

^{Aaron. It takes time to find one’s feet on a new team. After 3 months this felt like a statement.} 

^{Brendan. This was no perfect performance, but it was super impressive, strong, brave and a little bit of subtlety. A few of the passes in front of other lads were top drawer!} 

^{Dean. Moving on from top drawer, to top shelf. You did good, real good.} 

^{Don’t think Shane is ready to throw in the towel though! Just great to see you back.}
