AFL 6 T Davis 1-11 Lucan 5-11 Kiltipper

Lucan started well, and a couple of early goals meant Davis’s were always chasing the game. Can’t beat a nice plump cushion between us and them!

Dean started like he finished the last day with a neatly executed point. Unfortunately he was to be disappointed thereafter. It was one of those days where the ball went wherever Dean wasn’t! Chin up. Next day we go again.

Marc was on the 40, much further from goal than usual. He may not have brought his best scoring boots, but his runs from deep were creating havoc. 9 mins in he found himself top of the Davis defensive menu, in a real meaty sandwich. Ref did airplane impersonation, and Jordan buried the penalty. He then got on the end of a great ball in from Brendan. A Davis’s finger tip only taking it away from his own man and on to Jordan. Goal #2. And then a point! Oscar slotted a neat point, and 2-3 without reply, at quarter time was a dreamy start. Davis’s had had their chances, but some serious wides, had them looking pretty deflated. They finally worked a decent point. From Shane’s pinpoint kick out to Michael, a quick handpass to Brendan, who made ground and layed it off for Louis. A smart one-two with Marc, and Louis didn’t allow the keeper to get a touch. Less than a minute. End to end. No Davis player got so much as a sniff. Super goal. Where was RTE outside broadcast when you needed them?

Second quarter was a quieter affair, and chances went abegging at both ends. Aaron managed to slot a point. Personally I wouldn’t have noticed, if he hadn’t gone on and on and on about it, in the car home! Davis’s had second half elements, wind and hill; and despite an 11 point deficit they gave it a rattle. Over the first 25 mins they outscored Lucan 1-7 v 0-4, and advantage was down to 5, with just 5 mins to go, getting into squeaky bum territory.

Lucan had been profligate in second period. Final passes going astray or worse not being attempted at all, due to some poor decision making. Sam had opened matters with a point. Tony replied when Davis’s worked a neat goal. Peter had come on and powered through two would be tacklers for a much needed score, but Lucan had lost momentum. It’s small things that turn the tide. Lucan had collected a short kick out, and multiple passes had retained the ball, but not made any progress up the field. Davis’s lost patience, and Niall won a free when his man tried to get a piggy back. Niall went short to Brian and set off a 2 minute period of possession. Some pundits don’t like it, but from the Technical Area on Lucan side line it looked awesome! Eventually the ball was worked through to Sam, and he burned the corner back, and left keeper flailing. Wind went out of the home team. You could almost hear it. A poor kick out was worked goal wards by Tim, and Sam was on the back post to repeat the dose! Shane had a stormer between the posts. Mostly kicked short. We didn’t lose one! at least 2 top drawer saves. One at a critical stage in second half. Niall at full back, was the opposite of Dean today…..he always seemed to be in the right place to break up attacks. Cian gave a super display of defending. I’ve no doubt his man will have trouble sleeping tonight! He’ll expect to find Coanb in his pyjamas!! James stepped into the centre back role. I’ve no stats for it, but he was frequently the link between defence, and releasing our runners. Brian, Declan and Gareth added fresh legs when it was needed.

Did I say goals win games? Scored 5, but being a grumpy young reporter, I can’t help but play over in my head, the hatful we left behind.

Train. Train. Train. And I’m not talking about Thomas The Tank Engine!
