Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes
March 20, 2023
Team News
Well done to Abby Sheils and Daire Newcombe who contributed to the County at the week-end with some strong performances for their county.
Poor weather saw a lot of games cancelled this week leaving us a scarcity of news in what was proving to be an exciting start to Sarsfields season at all levels. This left a good segway for promotion of the White Collar Fight Night our big event to raise funds to support development at the club and have the pitches and facilities available in all weather conditions.
We are launching our 2023 fundraising event on Thursday 23 March at 7pm in our Clubhouse at the 12th Lock. Thanks to our brave members who have volunteered to face off against each other in the ring. The event itself takes place in the Big Top located in our car park on April 29th.
Go Ahead AFL1, 19/03/2023, Lucan Sarsfields 2.10 - Skerries Harps 2.07
Our Senior football team maintained 100% start to the new season in AFL1 thanks to a 3 point win in the 12th Lock over a resilient Skerries team. The first half lacked many clear cut scoring chances. Skerries failed to take advantage of the elements and only registered one score. With a two point lead and with the advantage of a strong wind Lucan started the 2nd half with the intention of putting the game to bed as quickly as possible. Well-constructed scores from Colm Behan, Jack Lawlor, Luke Walsh and Brendan Gallagher put Lucan in a strong position. Some frees were keeping Skerries in touch but the crucial score of the game came mid-way into the 2nd half when Lucan full back Alan Murphy finished off a flowing move started by the goalkeeper with a well taken goal. A few minutes later Darren Gavin scored an almost identical goal from another long kickout from man of the match Alec Bierne. With Lucan 9 points ahead the game looked well over but Skerries continued to push forward and were rewarded by scoring an unanswered 2.01 to leave just two points between the teams entering injury time. Another successful long kickout gave a simply opportunity to Bren Gallagher to tap over a free that would finally settle the contest.
Next up for Lucan is a home game against All-Ireland winners Kilmacud Crokes in a rearranged match on Wed 29th March in the 12th Lock. Hopefully there will be plenty of home support as the team put there 100% record on the line against the Dublin and All-Ireland Champions.
19/03/2023, 12th Lock, AFL6, Lucan 2-16 v 5-07 R Towers (L).
Was it a winning draw, or a losing one? Still not sure, it was definitely squeaky bum at the end. Last 4 attacks in added time yielded points, as Lucan twice came from behind, after the last one ref blew up, not even an attempt at the kick out. Last day out Lucan flew out of the blocks with 1-2 in the opening 3 mins. Today it took Towers 6 mins to notch up 1-2. The Lucan attack wasn’t quite clicking, but in a 3 min spell from 10th min, Jordan popped 2pts, and Oscar’s 45, eluded the keeper to the top corner. Level pegging.
Lucan seemed to be taking control, but this was a topsy turvy game, and Towers were able to get in behind for their 2nd green flag. Lucan picked themselves up, and Louis, Tommy and Dean levelled matters again.
Guess what? Back in the driving seat…..not for long. Again an attack broke down, Towers got in behind and Anto was left no chance. Again Lucan rallied and Jordan & Tommy left the minimum between the teams at the turn.
Leaking 5 goals sounds as though the defence will be under pressure at training on Tuesday, but they were often outnumbered by Towers breaking from deep. Michael had an assured debut. Jack, Niall & Seamus were solid; Conor carried brilliantly and Davy was Davy! Oscar and James continue to grow as a midfield partnership. Tim & Brossie were busy.
There was a sense that if Lucan continued to kick their points, surely we couldn’t keep leaking goals. Could we? Lucan pointed to level matters, and then? Well you can probably guess? Towers goaled. Oh for crying out loud. Lucan rallied and had levelled matters again by the mid-point. Dean then wrestled the initiative for Lucan with a perfectly finished goal. Now it was Lucan with a 3pt advantage, and the chance to press on. But….but….but Towers had other ideas, a break up field involving a network of passing left last line of Lucan’s defence badly exposed, and ref blew for the penalty. Level again. Towers picked up the kick out and edged in front. 30 mins was up, although there had been a number of stoppages.
Brendan took responsibility with a super point. Towers edged in front. Tommy pointed. Towers edged ahead. Yet again. Ref must have been enjoying the match, because he certainly wasn’t in a hurry to blow it up. One last chance. Towers had everyone back, but Lucan showed huge patience, and finally worked the ball to Tommy. Towers panicked, and having bundled Tommy to the ground, he then stood back up and pointed the free. Level for the 7th time! Game over. Thanks to Anto for stepping up in the absence of Dean, who was much mentioned, both in the dressing room before and on pitch side. I hope Anto will forgive me for saying we all wish we’d had Dean out there today!!

U12 LGF
Two of the u12 ladies football teams got a match in this weekend. They travelled over to Stillorgan on a very wet Saturday afternoon to play Kilmacud Crokes. The rain poured down for our warm-up but gradually eased and stayed dry then for most of the match. After missing their matches last weekend and their training session during the week the girls were delighted to be playing football. Both teams played very well and you could see the improvement as the game proceeded and the team work became apparent. We got a lovely reception from the mentors and U12 girls from Kilmacud Crokes and we look forward to welcoming them to Lucan Sarsfields later on this year. Big thank you to all our parents for their continued support and for all the encouragement they give the girls.
