Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

Team News

This was the second week back for many players for both club and county and a busy time in the club with both the Awards night and the Hurling medal presentation taking place this week-end.

Well done to Daire Newcombe who travelled to Derry with the Dubs and put in a solid performance.

Dublin U16 Ladies Football saw Chloe O’Shea and Anya Dunne compete in the first round of the Leinster U16 Championship in a 4-09 to 5-05 victory for Dublin.

Congratulations to our three Lucan Minors Mia Farrell, Aoibheann Stokes and Milly Hughes lining out for Dublin in the Leinster Final in Abbotstown on Saturday.

AFL Div 1: St Vincent’s 0-12 - Lucan Sarsfields 3-09.

Our Senior team made it two wins from two games in AFL1 thanks to a hard fought win away to St. Vincents. Jack Lawlor put in a 5-star performance scoring 3-2 from play and was the difference between the teams in this intense battle. With Lucan on the back foot for the first fifteen minutes the half turned following a robust tackle and turnover from Alan Murphy which led directly to Lawlors first goal. Despite struggling in the possession stats and losing Derek Cahill to injury, Lucan went in at half time leading 1.05 to 0.07. In the 2nd half Lucan stretched the lead and maintained the winning margin to the end thanks to two more well taken goals from man of the match Jack Lawlor. Next up for Lucan is a home game against Skerries Harps on 19th March where they will hope to maintain the 100% record.

AFL Div 4: Lucan Sarsfields 1.09 - St Vincent’s 1.07

This game was in the balance until the last kick and it was a great relief that Lucan came out on top. Having missed several good opportunities at the start of the game, Lucan were hit with a goal by an experienced looking Vincent’s team. That score was enough to give St. Vincent’s a one point lead at half time as both sets of backs seemed to be on top. As the lead for the visitors stretched to 3 points Lucan then hit the score of the game when Brian "Frenchy" Callopy hit a rocket of a shot high into the net to pull Lucan level. From there Lucan took control of the game and pushed into a 2 point lead with good scores from Kevin Fitzgerald and Jack Carey. Some frees kept St. Vincent’s in touch and it took Keith Moran to slot a late free from near the side-line to get Lucan over the line in this evenly contested game. Hopefully the momentum from a strong 2nd half showing will be brought forward into the coming weeks.

AFL Div 6: Lucan Sarsfields 2-12 vs St Pats Donabate 1-12 Sun 05/03/2023.

This might be less a match report, and more like annual review at work. We won a game that in all honesty we had no right to expect to win. Pats came to the Lock last year and put 0-21 on the board. Later they did the dog on us in Championship. I spoke to their manager before, and after. I would describe his pre match demeanour, as quietly confident. Afterwards? Well afterwards, he wouldn’t speak to me. The ear to ear cheesy grin may not have helped. 8 of todays players were on the field at the Lock last year. So almost half a new team, plus positional changes. That is credit to both the new faces, and the old heads that went back to war.

A slightly different tack on today’s match report. The players did their thing, but on the line the Banisteoir and his team had decisions to make. At AFL6 level, we are not used to a squad of 29 lads. Once the ref threw the ball in, there were 14 guys standing behind. Safe to say they all thought that they should be out in front, not behind. I think all that choice made decisions even harder. Picking the team prompted plenty of discussion during the week. Trying to assess what was happening on the field and who, of the subs, was best suited to answer the call, was a really tough gig. Some of those subs were hard done by. Maybe they should have gotten on. Others are new faces, and they have to prove themselves. Don’t get me wrong, 14 subs means we have competition. The more competition the better for this team. All we have right now, is a Good Start. Which is worth nothing if we don’t have a Strong Finish. To achieve that Strong Finish we will need all those names at the top of the page doing their job. That means every single session you can make. Be there. Work hard.

Dara is telling you all the positive stuff over tea & biscuits. Believe.

The match? We opened with 1-2 in 5 mins. After that there was nothing between the sides. At any given point in the 60 mins Pat’s might have drawn level, or Lucan pulled clear. But Lucan had their cushion to the end. No names mentioned this time. A 29 man effort won the game.

Squad & Scorers: Dean Davis, Conor Sheary, Davy Mescall, Colm Kelly, Callum Buchanan, Seamus Keher, Tony Mulqueen, Oscar Nolan (0-2), James Finn, Louis Butler, Tim Bradley, Sam Noctor (0-2), Marc Sharkey (1-2), Jordan Delmar (1-6), Brian Tracey. Juvenile/Coiste na nÓg

U8 Camogie

Our Girls had their first Camogie match this morning, as a "proper" team, against Commercials in Rathcoole. They all put in a great effort and all mentors were delighted to see them show off the skills we have been working on over the past month in training. There was some great ground striking, passing and excellent goals. It is also great to see them make new friends, which will be playing with them for years to come.

U12 LGF

The U12 ladies football group had their first official football match on Saturday. We had 4 team, in total over 50 girls played. 2 teams stayed at home on AGP and played against St. Brigid's. All teams here played very well and were excited to be back at matches. Our 2 Lucan referees, Roisin and Cora were fantastic, taking time to explain to the girls why they blew the whistle so the girls learned a lot as well as enjoying their first game.

The other 2 teams went down the road to St. Catherine's Park to play against Na Gaeil Óga. The girls were very excited about this one as many were class mates and this made it more competitive but also more fun. The referees here spoke to the girls in Irish, some of our non Irish speakers were a bit confused to start with but very quickly picked up all the Irish phrases. So lots of learning done here too. There was a great atmosphere at this match and the scores were very tight at the end. I'm sure there will be great conversations had in our two Irish schools this week, Maith sibh cailíní.

U14 Div D Group B: Lucan Sarsfields 4-16 Na Fianna 3-10

Lucan Sarsfield U14 B team continued their good start to the season with their 3rd straight win. A super team performance against a tough Na Fianna team saw the Lucan side come away with a hard fought win. Some fine team play, and great scores along with an amazing penalty save from goalkeeper Cian Becker. Scores from Tadhg Henry, Zach McBride, Darragh Lawlor, Harry Meehan, Cathal Mullaly and on Aidan McCabe's last outing for Lucan he also got on the score sheet with a couple of nice points from play.

U13 Football Grading Div 4: Lucan Sarsfields 5-07 St. Peters 5-09

A great performance from the boys today, our best performance of the season so far. Unlucky to lose by 2 points to a fast, skilful St Peter's team. The lead changed hands multiply time and there was never more than 3 points between the sides.

U16 Football Div 1: St. Oliver Plunkett’s Eoghan Ruadh 1-8 - Lucan Sarsfields 1-13

Lucans U16A footballers made it two wins from two, after a tough battle away to St OPER in the second round of their U16, Div 1 football league campaign. After securing a great win away to Kilmacud in round 1, Lucan expected another tough test when travelling to the Phoenix Park to face a strong St OPER side on Saturday. With the aid of a slight wind, Lucan settled well and played some good football in the first half. St OPER showed their own strength, however, and it took some great defensive work from Lucan to keep them at bay.

At the other end Lucan showed good attacking prowess and kicked some good scores, while also leaving a few chances behind them. After a competitive first half Lucan led by 7 points to 4 at h/t, and knew they had to raise their game in the second half to repel the St. OPER threat. Both teams traded scores early in the second half before Lucan increased their lead to 5 with two well worked points. However, the momentum of the game swung midway through the half when St OPER pounced on some hesitancy in Lucan’s defence to score a goal and reduce the gap to 2 points. St OPERs tails were up and they followed up with 2 further points to equalise with 10 mins left. This kind of setback might have beaten these Lucan lads in the past, but for the second game in succession they showed their mettle by responding with a strong finish. A crucial save by Evan Flynn kept OPER at bay before Lucan worked the ball forward & scored 3 unanswered points to regain the momentum. St OPER responded to cut the deficit to two, before the crucial score came with minutes remaining when Patrick O'Connor weaved his way through the defence and finished off with a great shot to the bottom corner of the St OPER net to put Lucan 5 up. St OPER pulled one back but Lucan saw the game out showing good maturity to keep the ball and scored a late point to win by 5. With 21 of our squad of 23 available, and all 21 players, getting game time and contributing to a great win, it was a very satisfying squad performance. Well done to all players, and keep the effort up in training before our next league outing v St Jude’s.

Thanks also to Lucan senior footballers, Jack Carey & Darren Gavin who showed their support at the game and spoke to the lads afterwards to give them some words of advice and encouragement.
