Adult Hurling

It was semi-final Sunday in the adult hurling championships and Lucan had all three Junior teams in action. The outcome was mixed fortunes as the Junior As had a great win over Good Counsel/Liffey Gaels to secure a place in the Junior A Final and promotion to Intermediate grade for next year. However, the Junior Bs and Junior Cs both lost out to Faughs and Thomas Davis respectively. Both performed very well in difficult conditions and with a bit of luck could have made the finals also. But it is the end of a long and generally progressive season for both these teams and they will be looking to go further next year after a well deserved winter break.

Senior Hurling Management

Our Senior hurling manager, Cathal Fenton, has decided to step down from the position. Cathal led Lucan to a historic first ever senior league title this year with a memorable win over Ballyboden in the final. They qualified for the knockout stages of the championship also but lost out to Ballyboden at the quarter final stage. The Club would like to thank Cathal, and his management and backroom team, for their commitment through the year and a significant contribution to Lucan hurling. The process is now commencing to put a management team in place for the coming year and anyone interested in being considered, or wishing to nominate someone, should contact Directors of Adult Hurling, Vincent O'Connor (087 2075835) or Paul Stapleton (087 2058572).

Junior A Hurling Championship Semi-final, Lucan Sarsfields 2-18 Good Counsel/Liffey Gaels 0-8. 12th Lock, 9th October 2022

A strong wind and persistent rain made it very difficult conditions for hurling at the 12th Lock on Sunday morning. Lucan played against the elements in the first half and were under early pressure from the visitors. However, tremendous work rate and intensity saw Lucan weather the storm and gradually get on top despite the conditions. Rory Stapleton got the first two points for Lucan, to keep in touch with the combo side. Then Sean Harkness finished a great goal after some good combination play by the Lucan forwards and this set Lucan on their way. Emmet Allen added a couple of points and Luke Murphy made a rare foray forward to finish another good move. Harkness goaled for a second time soon after and this gave Lucan a 2-6 to 0-4 lead at half time. With the elements now in their favour Lucan started the second half well and a string of points from Stapleton (3), Allen (2) and Eoghan O'Connor had them well in command entering the final quarter. The intensity had dropped somewhat at this stage as the margin widened and Lucan used the bench to good effect with all those coming in making an impact. Peter Kelly scored shortly after his introduction and Oisin O'Brien also added a score. A few frees from Sean Harkness and a point from play from Ben Coffey completed the scoring and saw Lucan home with a comfortable victory which secured a place in the final and guaranteed Intermediate hurling next year. The Lucan defence was very solid throughout and worked very hard particularly in the opening quarter when they were under sustained pressure. Cillian Muray made a couple of great saves when called on and his puckouts were effective in the conditions. The midfield pairing of Rob Ward and Barry Aird were on top for the most part, while Harkness, Stapleton and Allen led the scoring in a hard working forward line.

Junior C Hurling Championship Semi-final, Lucan Sarsfields 0-9 Thomas Davis 2-6

All of the drama in this encounter was held over to injury time and the supporters that waited to the end got some reward for braving the elements. Both teams took a bit of a battering from the weather with constant rain and a swirling wind preventing any real flow in the match. Behind by a point from the 55th minute, Lucan eventually got an equalizer from a placed ball in added time and extra time looked likely. A 65 for the visitors eventually found its way to the net though despite being "half-cleared" on three occasions. Lucan then had a 65 which was defended but also had a late shot that fizzed narrowly wide in the sixth minute of added time. It wasn't to be for the home team though.
Lucan started against the wind and eight minutes elapsed before Thomas Davis got the first score. Jake Mooney equalised and Liam O'Connor added two more from placed balls following strong running from Cathal Shanahan who was being fouled regularly. Thomas Davis levelled up and both teams just added another point each before the break with the score line even at 4-4.
On the resumption, Thomas Davis got an early penalty which they converted. Now wind-assisted in the second half, Justin Myler's puckouts were long and Eoin Power capitalised and scored an immediate reply. Another Thomas Davis free was cancelled out this time by Mooney profiting from an
other long puck out. Two more O'Connor frees - Shanahan still being fouled, eventually levelled up matters but Lucan could not get ahead. The Thomas Davis free in the 55th minute gave them the momentum to see the game out to the end.

Lucan had a great squad of players out on the day which bodes well for the future of this team and they will be looking to build on a second place finish in the league and this semi-final exit in the year ahead.
