Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

March 05, 2020

A Message from the Chairman.

As a club we need to fundraise annually in excess of €90,000, that’s just to keep the club going, sustain a clubhouse, grounds and over 140 teams in competition.

Hence, we recently surveyed members in order to gauge the appetite for a “Rock The Lock” style event. The response was low, and as such we cannot risk the investment required to run such an event where we could incur large losses were the event not supported.

Our need for fundraising stems from the fact that it costs over €440k annually to run the club, of which we raise €240k in membership fees. (Note that detailed accounts are available in our annual report).

We control our expenditure very carefully with facilities costing over €110k a year, team expenses almost €200k (including €60k GAA affiliation fees), with loan repayments, insurance, interest charges and any administration costs making up the remainder.

All the work done by members in running the club, managing teams, and ground maintenance is done on a purely voluntary basis.

The gap of €200k in our funding is made up from rental income of €40k, sponsorship of €40k, variable Lotto income of about €25k, Shop commission of €10k, and fund-raising events of over €90k (including our Christmas Draw, Annual Golf Classic, Race Day, and other events).

We are very grateful to the groups that undertake fundraising events to help make up that deficit and equally so to all those who support such events.

We will communicate a variety of events in the coming months and would appreciate your continued support.

Sincerely

Michael Bowler

Best of luck to Mark Lavin and Alan Murphy and the Dublin U20's as they prepare for the Leinster Final against Laois in Netwatch Cullen Park,  Carlow on Friday at 7:30 pm

Congratulations to the 2019 Minor C Footballers who collected their Division 5 South and Division 5 medals at the clubhouse on Saturday evening.

Sunday 1st March saw Lucan Sarsfields descend on Leopardstown racecourse for the 5th Annual Race Day. Fresh from the midday Prosecco reception at the Clubhouse, two double deck bus loads of revellers arrived at the course, planning to take on the bookies and enjoy the afternoon.

The fashion police were not needed as our dapper crowd took their seats in the 1888 restaurant with the senior football team and their management looking like they had just walked off the set of Peaky Blinders.

A combination of heavy ground and poorly performing favourites meant that the bookies won this time round, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Lucan crowd who partied on regardless. The tension was raised in the room and you could hear a pin drop when the raffle took place after the last race. There was some very worthy winners and thanks to all the local hostelries, gyms and of course Leopardstown Racecourse for donating all the prizes.

The double deckers returned after sunset and delivered our merry crowd back to the clubhouse, where the night was finished off in style.

Thanks to Peter Power in the village who once again gave us a great deal on the marvellous wines served with the meal. Thanks also to all the local companies and members who came back again this year and supported the event. It was a financial success for the club but most importantly it was another great social day out for those members in attendance to enjoy. Until next year...
