Camogie Championship - Lucan v Lucan
August 31, 2017
Adult Camogie Senior 6 Championship
Lucan D 2-6 v Lucan C 2-4
Screams, roars, the smell of deep heat, hard fought victories, broken hurls, broken dreams – yes - the 2017 adult camogie championships are underway. Lucan is fielding four adult teams again this year in Senior 1, Senior 2 and two teams in the Senior 6 championship. In a cruel twist of fate both Senior 6 teams were drawn in the same Group and drawn to play each other in the first match on 29th August.
With bragging rights at stake this match was always going to be keenly contested. Before the game even got underway the Lucan C team (who were technically the away team) took possession of the home dressing room and dispatched their rivals to the away team dressing room. Apologies for the misunderstanding from the Lucan “C” management team fell on deaf ears as the two sides stood toe to toe for the throw in. An apprehensive referee was not sure what to expect as the two sets of eager mid-fielders jostled for position. As soon as the sliotar hit the ground it suffered severe punishment from both teams as it was moved up and down the field with great intensity. Lucan “C”, wearing green, got the better of the early exchanges and were two points up before the sliotar was able to draw a breath. Marking was tight and every ball was hard won and even harder to hold on to as the tackles came thick and fast. Friendships were put to one side as the heat of battle continued. The slightly older and wiser Lucan “D” team were playing in white but were no angels as they tried to unsettle their younger opponents. This was no training match – this was championship! The nets were rattled and points whizzed over like a “Snitch” in a game of “Quidditch”. At the break Lucan “C” held a precious two point lead.
The second half brought greater intensity as both teams used their full bench of subs to fuel the flames as the game remained in the balance. Goal keepers were kept busy repelling waves of attacks and returning the sliotar back into the furnace. Lucan “D” got their noses in front and just held out for a two point victory.
There were many positives to take out of this game with good skills and fitness levels displayed and most important of all, huge enjoyment for the players. The game involved some forty Lucan players with seventeen of this year’s U16’s playing in their first adult camogie championship game. The referee remarked on the spirit in which the match was played and the level of intensity shown. Lucan were certainly the real winners on this occasion!
