U15A Camogie girls complete the League and Championship double
Our Under 15 girls completed the League and Championship double with a convincing win over Kilmacud Crokes in the final in OâToole Park.
In near perfect conditions for Camogie, Lucan won the toss and elected to play against a slight swirling wind.
From the throw-in Lucan took the game to Kilmacud with a quick ball from Aoife Mahon to Laura Quinn resulting in a point in the first minute. As the girls piled on the pressure, Chloe OâConnor was fouled in the square, the resulting penalty was saved but Chloe pounced to dispatch the rebound to the back of the net.
With the girls hungry for every ball Kilmacud struggled to get out of their half, the mazy runs of Laura Quinn were causing panic for the defence, and she was ably assisted by the lively pair, Ali Dunne and Aoife Coffey.
Kilmacud managed to clock up a point from a free before 2 more well-taken points by Laura Quinn and Chloe OâConnor.
The Lucan midfield pairing of Aoife Mahon and Hannah Brady were controlling the centre of the field, delivering a good supply of ball into the full forward line of Carla Delmar, Chloe OâConnor and Ciara Crosbie, who threatened the Kilmacud goal throughout.
Faye OâReilly in goals was confident under the dropping ball, and was ably assisted by the Lucan full-back line, Heather Kenny, Aoife Byrne and Laura Lawless who repelled the Kilmacud attack. With the half back line of Caitlin Maguire, Siofra Byrne and Willow Byrne on top, Kilmacud were held to just one point from play for the rest of the first half. Lucan finished out the first half with four more points, 2 apiece from Aoife Mahon and Laura Quinn.
At the start of the second half Lucan introduced Rachel Feighery for Ciara Crosbie as Kilmacud made some positional changes to try to counteract the Lucan attack. A pointed free from Aoife Mahon got Lucan on the scoreboard before Kilmacud struck back with a point. Aoife Whelan was now introduced for an injured Hannah Brady. After a sweeping move by Lucan up the field Aoife Coffey drilled home a fine point. The Kilmacud goal was under constant attack, and as they tried to force Laura out over the end line, she gave a quick pass to Rachel in front of the goalmouth which Rachel duly capitalised on by rattling the back of the Kilmacud net. Breaking down the field, Kilmacud managed to breach the Lucan defence and score their first goal. As the excitement levels reached fever point the fresh legs of Faye Murphy and Rosin Egan were introduced, Lucan quickly moved the ball forward from Laura Lawless to Siofra, to Aoife Coffey and the ball was then batted into the net by Rachel.
Kilmacud never gave up and despite some brave defensive play they forced the ball over the line for a second goal. Lucan once again responded with a well taken long range free from Aoife, and Chloe got one more point to seal the victory.
The presentation was made to captain Aoife Mahon by Dublin Camogie vice chair Jenny Byrne, who remarked on the excellent pace and skill level on display by both teams. Siofra Byrne was presented with the Player of the Match award.
Final score Lucan 3-11; Kilmacud 2-3.
This result was the icing on the cake for this fantastic group of girls, who have been unbeaten throughout 2016 in all their competitive games.
