Senior 6 Camogie Championship
Lucan Senior 6: 0-10 Good Counsel: 2-3
Who needs to wait till the October Bank Holiday weekend, our Senior 6 girls ROCKED THE LOCK last night with a pulsating 1 point victory over Good Counsel to secure at least a home championship quarter final.
All started well for Lucan in the first half as our girls played wonderful flowing Camogie to secure a 7 points to 1 half time lead. With Kelsey Fahy and Lucy Fleming winning good ball in the full forward line, Orla Sadlier, Yasmin Kilduff, Abby Lawlor and Fiona Dowler made this possession count with fine scores. Our backs Katie Hegarty, Tara OâConnor and Dani OâConnor were rock solid in front of the ever improving Aoife OâKane in goal. The ever dependable Niamh OâConnor owned the centre back position.
Good Counsel steamed back into this match in the second half, scoring a quick-fire 1-2 to leave the minimum between the sides. Following some substitutions at half-time, Lucan found it difficult to re-discover the rhythm they showed in the first half. During this period Sarah Prendergast and Katie Feeney fought tenaciously to try and re-establish an attacking platform for Lucan. Eventually Lucan got back on top in defence with Catherine Carron, Kate Britton, Rhiannon Withero and Grace Kenny playing themselves into the match. From this defensive dominance, Lucan broke out to score 2 unanswered points giving us a 3 point advantage. Cue high drama. Lucan were awarded a 21 yard free following great work by Anisa Khan. Unfortunately it was not converted and Good Counsel broke to score a breakaway goal to leave the sides level with 5 minutes left on the clock.
To their credit the girls were not going to let this game go and they out-fought Counsel for the remainder of the game. With one minute remaining, following some good work by Ella Dawson, Lucy Fleming secured the sliothar near the end line, made an angle for herself and fired over the winning point. There was just time for one more Counsel attack but our defence stood firm and the ref sounded the sweetest whistle of the night to signal the end of the match. What a team performance. The girls went home justifiably proud of themselves to study for their respective Maths, French and History exams on Friday morningâ¦â¦Living the balanced life!
